Chasmatophyllum musculinum's singular beauty! (2 pics)

These two plants catch my attention every time I'm at my windowsill and the sun in shining. With such beautiful leaves who needs flowers? :)

These two Chasmatophyllum musculinum plants are this Summer's newcomers on the windowsill. I hope to be able to give them a good home. So far they look happy, react to water and grow new leaves and branches eagerly.

  1. I grew these some years ago as they were reported to be very cold tolerant. Of course, the rabbits ate them. :( I never noticed the beautiful leaf patterns, especially with the sun shinning through them. I always grew things on a big scale. Lots of plants spreading out in the garden soil. Big clumps of things taking up lots of space. Big is impressive and it attracts attention, but the small and close up is also beautiful and subtle. I've learned a lot about looking at things close up and from different angles from your blog. I'm developing a whole new admiration of the little plants thanks to you. I have no Chasmatophyllums now, but once I'm settled into the new house, and have my new T5 lights for seed starting, I've got them on my new mesembs to grow list. They certainly are beauty in a windowsill. Thanks for sharing them with all of us. :D

    2. Those infamous rabbits!! Can't you plant salads somewhere as distraction in the future? :)

So many mesembs show their beauty with the light play. And I agree, to catch and admire it might only be possible on a windowsill when you are able to look at them up close. There are always new things to discover, especially with the plants you haven't grown before. These two plants are the first Chasmatophyllum I own. Got them in Essen as I always do (such an amazing source of new plant discovery!!) They are sort of like Rabiea but with small and shiny leaves.

Don't tell me about the grow list :D (No, please do, I really want to know what you wish to grow XD) I've just sown some lithops and other mesembs and have a very good germination rate precisely for those plants I have no idea about. It's quite exciting. Imitaria muirii, Dracophilus proximus, Juttadinteria deserticola...

Also, I've sown my last bunch of Muiria (5 seeds). So far 3 have germinated. This is unfortunately my last attempt. The seeds are just impossible to find.

  2. You have sparked my interest in Chasmatophyllum. I will have to order some seeds from Mesa Garden for next season.
