Aaaand two more flowers :D

Today's photo shooting is all natural. :)
No staging with black background or anything. Even though the flowers open after the sun is gone they light up the windowsill themself, it seems.

And to give you some sense of the scale:

You can see that the already closed flowers still stay there and look just like those that about to flower. It makes it more difficult to catch them open.

  1. If you only had open windows, you might be visited by lots of butterflies! Just wonderful, happy little plants. So many flowers. Avonia obviously likes your apartment and your care. How long have you had these? They are only open for a single day? What interesting plants. Thanks for sharing them with everyone.

    1. Truly amazing that such a tiny plant could develop eight (large) flowers! Where does the strength come from? A power station hidden in the trunk? :) I got them both in May or June 2012. I grow them in pure pumice like lithops and water when I squeeze the trunk and it feels a little soft. The care is rather intuitive... The flowers open only for one single day and stay open only for 3-4 hours in the evening. When they close they don't ever open again. That's why it's such an event! ;)

  2. Thank you, Rika, for flooding us with pics of the Avonia flowers! 8-D Very much appreciated! They are really really handsome! Do you even cross-pollinate them to try to get seed? Or do you need two genetically different plants to get a successful pollination?

Your window sill of Mesembs is indeed a world full of marvels! My Lithops board on the balcony is quite the opposite: A world of disasters and pain...*boohoohooo* ;o)

    Kindest regards

    Andreas

    1. Haha, you're welcome :D
Actually, Avonia quinaria is the only Avonia that needs a genetically different partner for pollination. Makes me sorry I only have one plant. Maybe I could try to grow more of them from seed some day. :)

Andy, I refuse to believe it's a disaster! I've seen your beautiful seedlings! ;)
