Neohenricia's open flowers

Yesterday I had to wait until 23:30 to see fully open Neohenricia flowers! Looks pretty and smells nice (in small quantities) but you can't enjoy it much if you're sleepy. Photos help with that. :)

    1. Yes, somehow :)
Since they flower at night, they don't really need to be pretty, only smelly XD

  2. Hi Rika,
Interesting little plant. I can't decide what the leaves look like. The Afrikaans name for Neohenricia is vratvygie, which means "coral plant". The book "Vygies" says petal of flowers should be tipped with red. I see a little bit of color on the tips of your plant's flowers, but it's not very noticeable in the photograph. In the booklet "The New Growing The Mesembs" Ed Storms writes, "We have found that in cultivation it (Neohenricia)needs more water than one would think and consequently it gets water twice as often as most other mesembs". What's your experience with watering Neohenricia? I've never grown Neohenricia and will have to learn about it through you, thanks.

    1. Hi Bob,
The flowers chenge the color during the flowering period. They are greenish-white on the first day but pinkish on the last day. See here: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IuRuGBgB6C0/UF145StxudI/AAAAAAAAB1I/SYvZYGGx9jo/s1600/Neohenricia+sibbettii_034.jpg
This plant is growing in pure pumice and in a 5x5x5cm pot so I water it a lot, almost every second day during the growing period if the sun is shining. If not watered for a while it gets wrinkly and the tips of the leaves become reddish (I understand some collectors appreciate this look). But I feel sorry for the plant and keep the leaves firm and the color green. I like it better this way. :)
So far I didn't have problems with it. It does get rid of old leaves in the fall but I read it's absolutely normal and the new ones grow very quickly. Also, it flowers like crazy all summer long if it's sunny.
